In-Depth BIO: Patricia J. Robinson, Ph.D. – Pioneer in Primary Care Innovation

Dr. Patti Robinson grew up in a rural part of Texas and healthcare resources were limited. When she received care, she liked the people that delivered it. Early on, she decided that she wanted to help others and thought nursing or teaching would be a good way to do that. In high school, she learned about psychology and set her sights on going to college. With scholarship support, she worked diligently in her studies and received her Ph.D. at age 26.

Robinson completed a health psychology internship in Kansas and then worked for several years as a school psychologist in Washington state. She then went back to working for a healthcare system and split her time between clinical practice and research focusing on mental health interventions delivered in medical settings, specifically primary.

Her presentation of results from several early studies of integrated care led to opportunities to consult with organizations that wanted to “follow the science” and bring behavioral health services to primary care clinics.

The new field of integrated care that emerged in the 1990s needed a model to guide implementation and support scale-up. Robinson moved to a rural area and began working with a large group of primary care providers in a rural health care system. The research question in this new “lab” was, “What can we do, as a team, to deliver more effective behavioral health interventions to more people in this setting?”

At this pivotal moment, Robinson met Reiter and together they made a commitment to define a model for integration and write a guide that others could use. Over 20 years have passed, and they are still writing together.

Robinson also realized that behavioral health providers needed to use different assessments and different interventions when they moved to the primary care setting. With Dr. Kirk Strosahl, Robinson developed a new psychotherapy approach, and it is now receiving international attention. This approach is designed to help people learn skills they need to respond more flexibly to the problems encountered in life. It is known as Focused Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.

Robinson and Reiter’s third edition of “Behavioral Consultation and Primary Care” provides a guide for systematic transformation to integrated care and provides a tool kit on Focused Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.
